Why are IR panels so popular in kennels, catteries and stables?
We’re taking a look at why infrared heating is sweeping the animal world by storm.
Unlike standard radiators IR Panels emit IR waves that bounce around the space. These rays hit objects and bodies, which then absorb the heat and re-emit any leftover energy into the room until it’s all used up. This leads to several benefits.
1) Flexible Installations
Animals come in loads of different shapes and sizes, and what works for one won’t work for another. Our heaters are the same, they can be installed in 3 distinct ways. You can wall mount it, suspend it from the ceiling, or even use a panel stand to keep it freestanding.
Wall mounts are a great all-round option. If you have a pet that likes to move to lots of different comfy spots, the flexibility of a freestanding panel is a good option, as it can be easily moved from room to room as your pet’s whims change!
For outdoor pets like horses, or pets kept in a barn, our bar heaters might be a better choice.
2) The Perfect Level Of Heat
Our IR Panels are available with a range of different control options (and even our basic classic panels can be customised to your liking with our thermostats), which means you can easily keep them at the perfect comfortable temperature.
Our Wi-Fi panels are particularly popular because of their long distance control. Combine them with a nanny cam and you’ll be able to switch the heater on when your pet is sat in front of them and off when they leave.
3) The Health Perks
Naturally, we want the absolute best for our pets, and so it makes sense to be worried that something called ‘infrared radiation’ might be harmful. However, there’s no need, IR radiation is perfectly safe and natural- it’s the same energy you get from the sun, with no harmful UV radiation to worry about.
Halogen lamps were a popular option for warming up our pets, but these featured bright lights that could damage their eyes. Most IR Heaters (with our Aurora range being an exception) don’t produce any light, which can help aid their sleep.
IR heating isn’t just safe, it’s actively beneficial to your furry friends! Radiant heat can aid muscle condition in your pet. This helps relieve sore or stiff muscles, helping your pet to relax.
Many horses use Infrared Heat Therapy (IHT) where horses ‘sunbathe’ under a panel to get a boost to their vitamin D production.
4) Easy To Clean
We love our pets, but they and their surroundings can get messy really quickly!
Our IR panels don’t require much maintenance in general. The most they’ll need is an occasional wipe down with a microfiber cloth. This will also keep your panel free from slobber, food and dirt! You don’t even have to worry about getting the surface wet, as they are protected from splashes of water.
5) Less Fur
Radiant heaters don’t circulate warm air like convection heaters do. This means they spread less mould and dust around, which is fantastic for people (and pets!) with respiratory difficulties.
However, a crucial perk of this is that it stops pet hair from being circulated around your room too!

What about other pets, like a tropical fish tank? Does the infrared penetrate the glass and heat the water?
Hi Simon!
We wouldn’t recommend using a panel heater to warm your tropical fish tank, although specialized aquatic infrared heaters built with tanks in mind are becoming more popular. If your fish tank has a thermostat, you won’t need to worry about an external infrared heater impacting the temperature.
